Happy Food Allergy Awareness Week
May 8-14

BREATHE.
Being a parent of a child with food allergies can be overwhelming at times, so I'm reminding you to stop and "take a deep breath".
Take as many as you need!
Imagine being just one parent of the 3 million children in the U.S. with food allergies. Let's all take a deep breath!

Picture
CONNECT.
Support means everything! We leave the doctor's office and so often are left with only a diagnosis. Every 15 minutes a child is rushed to the hospital because a life-threatening food allergy. Reach out and connect with the food allergy organizations and support groups out there. We recommend a medically-based group with a board-certified medical advisor. You may just avoid an ER visit because of it! Connect for information. Connect for resources. Connect for support. Connect because parents of children with food allergies are the "experts"!

Picture
LEARN.
Learn the facts about food allergies! The more you know about your child's food allergy the better equipped you will be to manage them. A food allergy is an adverse immune response to a food protein. It is not the same as a food intolerance. There is no cure and it can be life-threatening. Allergic reactions are unpredictable, symptoms can vary, and be rapid in onset. Learn how to avoid your allergen(s).
Learn how to read labels. Learn how to administer epinephrine. Knowledge is power friends. Here's to being life-long learners!

Picture
LIVE.
Keep Living! There are days you or your child may feel paralyzed with fear, isolated, and alone...stay strong. Accept where you are and keep living. Live with your EpiPens. Readily available at all times. Do NOT delay in using this life-saving emergency treatment. Live with a medical allergy alert. Wear them as a routine safeguard. Live as a model for your child as you assess and minimize the risks. Live for each moment you
have a happy, healthy and SAFE child.

Picture
LISTEN.
Listen to your child. They know their body well! Trust your child's instincts - whether it is about eating food, after eating, or in an environment that just doesn't feel comfortable. Listen to your child as he/she shares their emotional and social stressors. Create a SAFE haven where they are free to be a kid! Advocate for inclusive positive schools and communities. Remember, food allergies are only a small part of your whole child.

Picture
BELIEVE.
Believe in a better day. A day that we don't have to be fearful of food. Believe each challenge you have faced has made you and your child stronger. Believe that if we put our efforts together we can find a cure for food allergies. Food Allergy Awareness Week 2011 may be ending, but please continue raising food allergy awareness. Keep supporting the organizations and research that BELIEVE in a cure for food allergies.
